Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee Republican Leader Rick Allen (R-GA) sent a letter to Department of Labor (DOL) Secretary Marty Walsh warning that the recommendations of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment (Task Force) will harm workers and taxpayers by exclusively focusing on the demands of union bosses.

The Members request transparency about the Task Force’s meetings and who contributed to the contents of the report. The Members also request information related to the report, including an accounting of taxpayer resources used and a cost analysis on how the recommendations would impact the federal budget and the economy.

In the letter, the Members write: “The Report’s recommendations appear to satisfy two overriding objectives of the Biden administration: empowering union bosses and expanding the size of the federal government. Not only does the Report represent a waste of both time and taxpayer resources, but also it explicitly instructs government agencies to bias themselves for the benefit of unions.”

The Members continue: “The Report doubles down on the administration’s preference for threatening employers and workers with heavy-handed enforcement initiatives… Failing to recognize that many workers want to work as independent contractors, the Report recommends several measures DOL can take to classify independent contractors as employees, thereby subjecting them to union harassment.”

The Members conclude: “Instead of focusing on the desires of union bosses, the Task Force and DOL should remove regulatory barriers that keep businesses from hiring and workers from making their own decisions.”
