Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 4, “John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021”:
Instead of holding this incompetent White House accountable and addressing the crisis in Afghanistan, House Democrats thought it more important to push forward a politicized, unconstitutional takeover of our elections while lying to Americans about the Voting Rights Act. If you listen to my Democratic colleagues, you would believe that the Voting Rights Act is not currently in force. It is.
In reality, this bill is yet another attempted power grab from swamp Democrats who want to take control over state and local elections in direct contradiction to our Constitution. H.R. 4 would turn the Attorney General of the United States into an unelected election czar with sweeping power to dictate election laws in Texas and the rest of the union. This bill would do absolutely nothing to prevent fraud and restore public confidence in our elections. Instead, it would further erode that trust by adding federal barriers to commonsense integrity measures, such as voter ID.
While measures like pre-clearance may have been necessary almost 60 years ago when the VRA was enacted, current registration and participation levels make it clear that they no longer are. Using the VRA as a shell to give more control to Washington under the guise of discrimination is an insulting disservice to those who actually fought for civil rights.
I voted ‘no’ and I proudly stand by my vote, the people of Texas, and the Constitution on this matter.
