House Committee on Oversight and Reform Ranking Member James Comer (R-Ky.) and National Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) sent a letter to U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressing grave concerns over reports the Taliban has acquired a significant arsenal of U.S.-made weaponry. Further, the Biden Administration failed to implement and execute a plan to prevent the terror organization from using U.S. military equipment.

“As a direct result of the Biden Administration’s poorly planned and executed U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Taliban is now armed with a significant arsenal of U.S.-made weaponry,” wrote the lawmakers. “Worse, it would appear the Biden Administration has no clue what or how many weapon platforms are now owned and operated by the Taliban. We are left wondering if the Biden Administration has a plan to prevent the Taliban from using our weapons against the U.S. or its allies, or selling them to foreign adversaries, like China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea.”

The Republican lawmakers note the Taliban has also seized biometric devices that could aid in its attempts to identify, persecute, and attack Afghans and allies that assisted in U.S. missions. To conduct proper oversight of President Biden’s poor execution of the withdrawal of U.S. and U.S.-allied forces, the lawmakers are requesting an immediate briefing and any information related to the Taliban’s access to U.S. military equipment.
