As President Donald Trump‘s second administration begins to take office, a new Marist/Knights of Columbus nationwide poll confirms seven in 10 Americans support limits on abortion.
Conservatives now wonder whether Trump will deliver on key pro-life issues, such as banning the abortion pill and completely defunding Planned Parenthood.
While federal law and Republican policies prohibit tax funds from being used to directly pay for an abortion, Planned Parenthood has long used its hundreds of millions of dollars in annual funding to essentially subsidize abortion clinic, leading pro-life Republicans to demand it be defunded entirely.
Trump must also decide whether to uphold the Food and Drug Administration‘s approval of mifepristone, the do-it-yourself, at-home abortion chemical.
Trump promised during the 2024 campaign to support continued access, despite its role in even more abortions being performed now than before the 2022 United States Supreme Court ruling allowing states to regulate abortion.
According to a statement from Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America, key findings include:
* Late-term abortion: 72% of Americans support limiting abortion to, at most, six months of pregnancy – the end of the second trimester. That includes ~71% of women, 78% of Independents and 56% of rank-and-file Democrats.
* Limits vs. no limits: In a binary choice between limits on abortion and no limits, over two thirds (67%) reject the no-limits position.
* Taxpayer funding: 57% of Americans, including 54% of women, oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion domestically (29% “strongly” oppose); 73% oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion abroad.
* Freedom not to perform abortions: 62% of Americans oppose forcing doctors, nurses and other health professionals to carry out abortions.
* Safety standards on abortion drugs: 63% of Americans, including 62% of women, agree an in-person visit to a medical professional should be required before abortion drugs can be given out.
* Pregnancy centers: 83% of Americans support pregnancy resource centers, which offer vital material, medical and educational support to mothers both during their pregnancy and after their baby is born. That includes 83% of Independents, 79% of Democrats, 82% of women and 80% of self-identified pro-choice respondents.
Pro-life leaders hailed the poll’s findings.
“Democrats who are still ‘Shouting Your Abortion’ after losing the presidency, House, and Senate in 2024 should think again. Their agenda of taxpayer-funded abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy remains deeply unpopular, as do their attacks on pro-life doctors and pregnancy centers that offer real alternatives to abortion,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
“With a new administration in charge, we look forward to reversing Biden’s weaponization of every aspect of the federal government to push abortion on demand, getting American taxpayers out of the abortion business, and a new focus on putting our government to work to truly serve both mother and child,” said Dannenfelser.
